Looking for Authors & Editors!

September 28, 2011 3 comments

Right, so I myself haven’t posted in a while but more importantly my friends who normally do post are also busy with college. YET, we somehow average 100+ views a day. Why is this? Is it our League of Legends topics? Is it our random geek thrills and photography? Or is it my obsession with Deadpool? Either way, I feel really bad not posting and I know we have readers who would love to add to the site so, I am looking for Authors / Editors. I know we are called So Cash, and we haven’t been playing Eve online lately but I don’t care. If you play Eve Online and you wish to tell us a tale about Hi-sec war or better yet a 0.0 experience. Then I’ll let you. if you play League of Legends by Riot games and want to post your Tier list vs others or maybe you want to post a champion guide or build order, go right ahead! I will have it so. Tell me what you want to do, even if you are a photography major or journalist major at a university somewhere and you are required to or are just looking for a blog to add your own personal flair to, then DO IT! Ask, and you shall receive. The only guidelines I ask you follow is to credit people if you use their material. (No stealing!) and try to not post obscene material that would only be adults. A few curse words such as “Fuck” every now and then aren’t stressful but don’t post a game review bashing a game entirely with profanity. Post gamer / geek / student friendly topics and have fun. I will be approving membership to the site and if we get enough Authors, perhaps I’ll upgrade the site to have specific area for each topics. Maybe even make a private section, etc. This site supports youtube links, so if you post a youtube url in the HTML screen, it will embed it automatically.

How do you apply? Just email me at rockmanneo12@gmail.com
Topic: A So Cash Application
Body: your name, preferred user name (can choose on wordpress), a little bit about yourself and your motives for applying to the site. nothing crazy just brief. Then just tell me what you want to post about. First come, get first dibs on topics of course. The email you want to use to sign in is also important.

Topic ideas:
This is just to give you examples of what you can do, that I’m looking for.

AP Carry Tier List – Leona Era (even though she isn’t out yet…)

July 13, 2011 Leave a comment

Top Picks: Twisted Fate, Annie, Rumble, Anivia, Orianna, Brand, Malzahar
Great Picks: Karthus, Vladimir, Nidalee, Mordekaiser, Fiddlesticks, Gragas, Akali
Good Picks: Zilean, Lux, Kassadin, Sion, Ryze, Cassiopeia
Situational Picks: Heimerdinger, Kennen, Kog’maw, LeBlanc, Morgana, Poppy
Bad Picks: Swain, Veigar, Katarina

Descriptions
Top Picks: These are the mages that shape the rest of the list. With the exception of Fiddlesticks, as he’s the only jungle mage, almost every team you can think of could replace one of the lower mages with one of these and get a better team overall. Some examples of ones that can’t would be a super campy Heimer/Nidalee comp, or a team focused entirely around kamikaze Karthus. These mages have tons of burst, a wide range of supporting abilities (Orianna’s shield, Anivia’s wall, TF’s ult, and the all have stuns/disables of some sort), and great initiation. The exception to this is Rumble, who just wins because his AP ratios stupid and he never dies. Dumb. (His ult is super good at initiating, though)

Great Picks: These mages can do well in a plethora of situations, but have a few weaknesses, such as the inconsistency Nidalee and Mordekaiser’s damage, the farm dependency of Karthus and Vladimir, or the short range of Akali. But other than these few weaknesses, these characters are extremely powerful.

Good Picks: All of these characters are very strong in some regards but have big weaknesses that the other team can exploit. For example, Zilean falls off hard late game if you don’t pair him with a really good, hybrid damage output carry like Irelia or Corki. The two characters I had trouble putting in this tier are Zilean, because he’s really amazing, just he fills more of a support role late game than a mage role, and Cassiopeia, because she’s very strong in lane, but I don’t really see her being picked at high levels except to counter specific characters (read: Rumble and Vladimir). She also requires an insanely good player, but you can see some of her potential on players like SYDTKO, SK Ocelote, and Hypnosiz.

Situational Picks: These characters are unordered in the list. Heimer you can pick for super defensive comps like the aforementioned Nidalee/Heimer push/poke strategy. Kennen and Kog’maw are both very strong on 3 mage teams, but it’s hard to carry a game with them in the standard US or EU style (1 or 2 AP carries per team). LeBlanc is an amazing counter to TF, but not great at much else (would like to see how she fares against Brand and Orianna more, though). Morgana is great when paired with certain characters, such as Corki, whose only real weakness is CC. Poppy is great if you’re Doublelift.

Bad Picks: Swain got nerfed hard and doesn’t really do much that other characters can’t do better (I wonder if he even still has the advantage against Vlad in lane…). Veigar requires too much farm and is just bad all around, his only good spell is his stun and it’s on too long of a cooldown, and his mana costs are atrocious. Katarina has an outdated mage design, as you can stop her damage super easily, whereas every good mage is either able to frontload all their burst (like Annie, who can do all her damage in a few seconds, then even if she gets focused down she’s still done her job) or is at least able to Zhonya’s and keep safe while it goes (Fiddlesticks, Kennen, Morgana, etc). Katarina can do neither.

AP Carries have been taken in a very boring direction ever since the original changes to Zhonya’s Ring, that gave it the 20% more AP passive. The best AP carries now are the ones who scale extremely well with AP, and are either super safe (Brand), have a lot of supportive options (Twisted Fate), or both (Anivia, Orianna). Before, the types of CC you brought, mobility, base damages, things like that were a lot more important, but that’s fallen off with recent item changes. Here’s hoping they’ll bring some of it back. WTB a high burst damage mage who doesn’t scale at all with AP :D

Surprise! I’m back. (And some words about LoL builds)

June 27, 2011 Leave a comment

So just a quick introduction to why I’m posting again: I went to a theme park today with Rockman, and he said I should!

Anyways, today I saw a thread on the LoL forums that was talking about people getting flamed for using “custom” builds.  I think this is always an interesting topic as I love to build my characters in new and exciting ways, but I think a lot of people misunderstand what a custom build really means.

When you load up the game as, say, an AP carry; let’s use Annie for the sake of example; and you go mid, there are certain expectations your team has of you.  One of these is that you will be dominant in the early-mid game, allowing for easier fights over dragon and such.  Another is that you will have a lot of burst to take out that Ashe or Vayne who’s just really pissing everyone off.  When you build and play standard, all of these expectations (within reason) are met.  This is why it’s extremely frustrating for someone to go and do a DPS Annie build “for fun” or “because I like to build her that way.”

The last time I had a DPS Annie build, she picked Annie and immediately called mid.  After everyone else had chosen (I forget the exact team comp, but it was very EU style with a bot lane carry + a support) we ended without anyone picking the AD carry, so I pick Ashe.  I then proceed to do my runes and masteries, and at about 5 seconds left, Annie goes “oh i’m building DPS”.  Now, aside from the fact that I only had five seconds to switch my character (which I did, to Malzahar), I found this extremely obnoxious for a couple of reasons.

1: She called mid, on a team where the carry is supposed to go bot.  No other carry would take mid, and she shouldn’t expect it for herself if she chooses a carry.

2: Having a gimped carry on the team is something that can be dealt with, but you need to be able to prepare for it at the champion select.  We were lacking heavily in damage.

3: She built it wrong.

Point number three is the one I want to focus on, as it is where a lot of the frustration comes from.  In this case, she rushed a Youmuu’s, and then a Last Whisper.  This is not just a bad build because it’s a DPS Annie, this is simply a bad DPS build.  There is no carry in the game that should build like that.  I think this is where a lot of people’s “custom builds” really have their trouble.  For example, if you want to build tank on Mordekaiser, that’s fine; it’s a gimped build but it can work.  But if you rush a Force of Nature, you have no damage; if you get a Spirit Visage, you’ll be just as tanky through the early game (and get that tank faster), while still getting some cooldown reduction.  If you’re an AP carry, and you do something silly like rush a Haunting Guise, you are building your character wrong (there are simply better ways of getting those stats).

This is where a lot of players get upset when people call them out on it, and it’s also something that a lot of players can use to improve their game.  Learn which items are good in which situations; for example, in TheOddOne’s Warwick guide, he advises people to only get Bloodrazors first if you both need the damage and won’t have trouble before getting them.  If you need the damage earlier, get a Malady or a Wit’s End.  Little changes like this can make a huge difference in the late game.

It really is like Starcraft, where players spend tons of time polishing their build orders to make sure everything works well.  You can do the very same thing in League of Legends.  And it should affect how you play as well.  In Starcraft, when you just get that big tech unit out, or just finish an important upgrade like Stimpacks, that’s when you should make a big push (known as a “timing push”).  In League of Legends, the same principle carries over.  You should run and grab dragon as soon as your carry finishes his or her Infinity Edge, because that minimizes the chance that your opponents will have something to counter it.  That’s a huge factor in determining how good an item is or isn’t.  Going back to the Haunting Guise example, sure, the stats on it aren’t bad; but it’s not a big enough difference to be difficult to counter, or to win fights that you wouldn’t win anyways, and it has no upgrade paths, so it’s better to just sit and wait out a Rabadon’s Deathcap and then make a big push.

Final thoughts: item builds are important, really important, in maximizing the effectiveness of your character in League of Legends.  Getting gold and spending it wisely are the two easiest ways to win, so learn your item builds, learn both WHAT is good, and WHY it is good, and be conscious about the decisions you make at the item shop.  Also, buy wards.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted something. The site has been renewed. The Team is still playing League of Legends and Minecraft while I am without a laptop because it finally overheated so bad that the motherboard melted. I’ve been busy as hell on campus, doing community service and attending weekly improv. Sunday was Zombiefest and for those who got to go, I’m sure you found Waldo Right?

How about the Ghostbusters?

Others I saw but couldn’t get a picture of was the boy who likes turtles, the joker, tons of left 4 dead monsters and look alikes, Ozzy Ozzbourne, Jesus, Beavus & Butthead and more.

College and my Ipad

September 1, 2010 Leave a comment

So I moved into my dorm room last weekend here at Point Park University of Pittsburgh. I am happy to be going for my Bachelor’s in Information Technology and this time it’s Networking instead of Programming. Since max credits were transferred I count as a mid year sophomore and got roomed with a bunch of them. So far the experience is fun as hell but with that I haven’t had time to play League of Legends or Minecraft. Not that Notch has done anything anyway. He’s too busy meeting people and going on his weekly vacations.

Anyway, Here’s a few shots of my dorm room. Notice the awesome DOMO!

Before I left I acquired my very own ipad and I am loving every minute of it. It makes note taking in class hella easy and brings me so many convenient uses for college. I even ordered a stylus for it off Thinkgeek.com just for the brush and doodle apps. I really love it!

Well it’s back to doing essays and statistics homework. Bye!

Willing to clarify any confusion and/or debate any character’s positioning, just post! I have to approve comments before they show up for some dumb reason but I promise you I will!

Also Urgot is not on any list because I don’t think he really feels any role well enough to be on any of the lists. If I put him on Tanky DPS, he’d be dead last.

Corki, the Overshadowed Aviator

Corki. I know him. I love him. I main as him. But how many other people do? How many other people can legitimately say they play a large portion of their matches as him? How many people have encountered a skilled Corki that either carried their team, or completely wrecked them? How many subpar Corki players have people encountered?

I can comfortably say that people encounter subpar Corkis more than skilled ones.

Why?

Corki is not Ashe, or Ryze, or Alistar. He’s not easy to pick up, practice with, and master. People tend to gravitate towards easy champions just because they’re easy to do okay with, as opposed to a champion like Corki, who is hard to do extremely well with. As a result, people who see others try Corki and fall short are quick to say that he’s a bad champion, and that anyone who plays him would be better off playing a simpler carry, like Ashe. Another issue is that Ezreal, another ranged carry with a playing style similar to Corki’s, outclasses him in nearly every aspect, particularly his difficulty.

Missile Barrage vs. Mystic Shot

Mystic Shot can out damage Missile Barrage, it scales with his attack damage, has a similar cooldown, and is a faster moving skillshot (easier to aim). In addition, Ezreal has access to this ability right from the start, while Corki has to wait until level 6 for his. The Missile Barrage has a very poor AP ratio, and is not viable to build off of. Even though every fourth missile is a Big One that deals double damage, it can be predicted by viewing Corki’s current buffs (it will say it’s ready to fire), and can be blocked completely by running behind minions. Mystic Shot wins.

Essence Flux vs. Gatling Gun

Essence Flux hits every target in a line, be it friend or foe. This means Ezreal can simultaneously buff his team’s attack speed and deal damage to enemies. A buffed team is much easier to push turrets with. However, Corki’s Gatling Gun provides both AoE damage and AoE armor reduction, thus allowing both himself and other physical DPS characters to be much more effective in team fights. Gatling Gun wins.

Arcane Shift vs. Valkyrie

Corki’s Valkyrie is extremely mana-hungry early on, and is on a long cooldown. Ezreal’s Arcane Shift is on a much shorter cooldown, can catch enemies off guard with an unexpected cast, and also shoots a homing shot at the nearest enemy. Arcane Shift, due to being a blink, is much easier to go through walls with, where a poorly-aimed Valkyrie can crash headfirst into a wall. Due to Arcane Shift’s effectiveness, Ezreal can level it up in lieu of his other abilities, where as a Corki that levels up Valkyrie past level 1 early on ends up gimping his effectiveness with Phosphorous Bomb and Gatling Gun. Arcane Shift wins.

Trueshot Barrage vs. Phosphorous Bomb

Ezreal’s ultimate can hit multiple targets at once, and can keep going to hit targets further behind the first set, at the expense of some damage. However, on a physical DPS build (one of the most common), Trueshot Barrage’s damage becomes lackluster quickly. Corki’s Phosphorous Bomb gives relatively cheap AoE nuke and blind, and is vital to early game harassing. Phosphorous Bomb wins.

Hextech Shrapnel Shells vs. Rising Spell Force

Rising Spell Force rewards Ezreal’s good aim with an stackable increase in his attack speed, up to 60%. This, combined with a team buffed by Essence Flux, can cripple turrets quickly. Alone, it gives Ezreal an boost in damage while his skillshots are on cooldown. Hextech Shrapnel Shells allow Corki’s basic attacks to deal an additional 10% true damage that can’t be resisted. This, combined with Gatling Gun and an armor penetration item such as Last Whisper, allows damage to add up even on tanked enemies. Despite this, Rising Spell Force wins due to a greater endgame effect on turrets.

Overall: Ezreal vs. Corki

Corki has the potential for extremely high burst damage, but this will fail if even one of his skillshots are missed. Ezreal ends up being more effective at sustaining his damage output, can be much more mobile with Arcane Shift than Valkyrie, and is far more effective at pushing turrets, and buffing his team to help push alongside him. Ezreal should win.

So why play Corki at all?

I picked up Corki before Ezreal was released, and I’ve never felt the desire to switch to Ezreal. If I play as Corki, do well as him, and enjoy myself as I play him, why should I bother switching to Ezreal just because he does Corki’s job better? People who pick up Ezreal see him as the only one that fills that particular niche, and are usually completely unfamiliar with Corki. If you wanted to pick him up now, be aware of the fact that an easier alternative exists, and it’ll take much less time to reach the same level of effectiveness as it would with Corki. It ends up being a matter of preference. I could start playing Ezreal, but in doing so, I would be moving to a champion that fulfills the same purpose, except he’s slightly easier to master, and my skills would probably end up atrophying for it. In a sense, I don’t play Ezreal because he’s easy. I play Corki because he’s hard. Also, it’s not beyond the bounds of reason to play a champion just because you enjoy him. Also note that Corki is by no means a subpar champion. If you’re in Draft Mode, and Ezreal ends up being banned or chosen by the enemy team, Corki can be a nice alternative.

Corki is extremely difficult to master, yes, but think about what you can do once you’ve mastered him. Those that know his true potential will oppose the naysayers, claiming that Corki, in the right hands, can dish out some of the highest damage in the game. This can be true, but it’s not as easy as pressing R to win. It actually takes commitment, time, and will probably initially result in horrible losses and the questioning of your intelligence, your sexual orientation, your mother’s sexual intelligence, and whether or not abbreviations count in Scrabble (they don’t).

Corki is unique in that he can assist the team beyond doing damage. His Phosphorous Bomb provides stealth detection, his Gatling Gun provides AoE armor reduction towards anything he’s aimed at, and his missiles can harass and keep an enemy at range while Corki’s teammates maneuver into a more advantageous position. Valkyrie lets him surge forward, suddenly adding an unexpected boost to a gank’s damage output, and it allows him to quickly flee from a fight gone bad, even allowing him to fly over walls, forcing enemies to go around. Thanks to a set of generic, yet effective abilities, Corki can find his spot in any team setup, with a preference to crowd-control heavy compositions.

I’ll be posting a guide to Corki soon (see: whenever I can bother to sit down and write it), but I figured I would throw this out now just so people can recognize him and understand that the bad Corkis they play against are not representative of the champion’s quality at all. Stay tuned!

Why I play Ashe 2.0

July 9, 2010 2 comments

Ashe - The Frost Archer

Well if you’ve read my “Why I play Ashe” article then I know why you’re here. It’s because times have changed since that post. Riot has Since Given Ashe a new ability and let’s not forget the Crystal Arrow had some changes as well. Now I know the old builds were nice but once you get up to lvl30, that Philosopher’s Stone  becomes a worthless item. So for those who have read the Ashe Guide I wrote already and would like some more advanced builds I’ve got two for you. The first one is actually common among some Ashe players.

Crit Damage Build

A Crit Damage Build for Ashe is most often criticized because you aren’t making full use of her Ultimate. So that being the biggest CON to this build, the biggest PRO is the Red Barring you’ll be doing to everyone. It’s a risky build in my honest opinion and doesn’t shine till late game.

Crit Damage Ashe Build

You Start the match getting a Long Sword and a Potion. + Next you will get a Last Whisper and Basic Boots. + By mid game you will be getting a BF Sword and Berserker’s Greaves. + Next a Zeal and finish Infinity Edge. + When your match get’s dragged out, then you will finish the Phantom Dancer.

Last Whisper will grant you more armor Penetration and Attack speed. Having this Early game makes you hurt A LOT! Berserker’s Greaves is entirely for more attack speed but if the enemy team has a lot of stuns and slows then I’d substitute for Mercury’s Treads.

Infinity Edge is a must on Ashe considering her Passive but the Zeal and Phantom Dancer really isn’t a must at this point. Usually the game ends before I get that far in the build but if you have the cash, a zeal gives you a nice little boost to movement speed + more Crit strike and attack speed. It can very much make up for the lack of Berserker’s Greaves if you don’t have them. Since Ashe is very squishy, sometimes that Banshee’s Veil is implemented in my build sooner to help against Stuns or just Blitzcrank. As I said this build is very risky because if the enemy team has a lot of CC then your only chance of using your high damage output is when they run.

Runes: Greater Marks of Desolation for Armor Penetration, Greater Seals of Malice for Critical Chance, Greater Glyphs of Furor for Crit Damage, Greater Quintessences of Furor for Crit Damage

Cool Down Build

The more fun build that was originally thought up by my friend CABC, focuses on cooldown reduction but still boosts Ashe’s Attack damage. Thanks to a new item like Youmuu’s Ghostblade, we can do that and more. The Biggest CON to this build is lack of Mana but I’m sure you can make up for it by spamming volley just a bit less. Biggest PRO is the ability to shoot Crystal Arrow every 45 seconds. All I can say is that this is my new favorite Ashe build of all time.

Cool Down Ashe Build

You start the same way with a Long Sword and a Potion. + Next you rush your Brutalizer and get basic boots. + Then get your Berserker’s Greaves and and Avarice Blade. + When you can, you want to finish Youmuu’s Ghostblade and get a BF Sword. By Late Game you will have another Brutalizer and have finished Infinity Edge. + If the game get’s dragged out then get the Phantom Dancer or just get another BF Sword. or

By mid game your cool downs might already be capped so you may not even want the extra brutalizer. Again, Zeal helps for more Attack Speed, Movement Speed and Crit Strike. If you really want more defense in this build then grab what you like. Mercury’s Treads, Banshee’s Veil, Frozen Heart, and Force of Nature all help depending on the opposing team.

With this build you can spam all your abilities more than ever. Youmuu’s Active can also be popped to eat towers in seconds. then run away. I actually back doored by doing this with Ashe despite her low HP, simply because it didn’t take long at all to kill the tower. In team fights you can also pop it and target the biggest threats to take them out quickly. I find this build so much fun because it just seems to make her more annoying then I ever thought possible. Now I can VOLLEHH 3 times before I can even speak the word.

Runes: Greater Marks of Desolation for Armor Penetration, Greater Seals of Focus for FLAT Cool Down Reduction, Greater Glyphs of Celerity for Cool Down Reduction Per Level, Greater Quintessences of Focus for FLAT Cool Down Reduction.

The Masteries for both these builds are the same at 22/0/8

Both of those builds are effective and fun to use. Obviously the cool down reduction one is more fun but I honestly don’t see builds like it out there. So if I see this build I know where it came from.

Hawkshot

Hawkshot

No longer Plentiful Bounty, Hawkshot gives Ashe the ability to scout and it has no mana cost. If you are jungling and Ashe is in center, watch out.

Alright, so there’s my builds that I have neglected to post for some time now. Hope you find some of this information useful in your quest to troll the other team.
